Time the work that produces a usable result

Measure source checks and corrections so you can compare the complete ParseMill workflow with manual entry.

In ParseMill, select an extracted invoice field to inspect its source, correct the value and export the reviewed workbook. Try your own invoices as well as the interactive sample. Compare upload, checking and correction time with your current way of building the same spreadsheet.

Include cases that cannot be repaired from the available source. A task waiting for a clearer document is different from a slow edit, and excluding it can make the workflow appear easier than it is.

The invented durations illustrate categories, not benchmark performance. Their active-work total is twenty-seven minutes: fifteen diagnosing, four editing and eight rechecking. The waiting time for S9 is separate and should remain visible as elapsed delay rather than being counted as continuous reviewer labor.

UK Government: Data Quality Framework encourages understanding and addressing data-quality problems in context. A categorized effort log helps reveal where the process needs improvement.

Collect comparable timings

  1. Define start and stop rules for each stage before measuring. Record whether initial full review is included or measured separately.
  2. Use the same document set and acceptance criteria when comparing workflows. Record reviewer experience and any assistance that affects the result.
  3. Log issue type, affected scope, active time and final disposition. Keep waiting time, interruptions and unrecoverable cases distinct.
  4. Summarize both totals and distributions by issue class. Retain individual records so a few difficult documents do not disappear inside an average.

W3C: Provenance model primer separates activities and responsible agents. Apply that distinction when recording who diagnosed, edited and verified a correction.

Avoid timing shortcuts that distort the result

Stopping the clock immediately after an edit omits the check that makes the correction trustworthy. Reusing a known answer from a previous run can also make a second workflow look artificially faster. Account for learning effects or use an evaluation design that limits them.

Do not compare raw parser speed with fully reviewed manual entry time. Compare equivalent endpoints, such as a register meeting the same acceptance criteria, and report processing time and human effort separately.

Use the log to choose the next improvement

For the fixture, diagnosis consumes the most active time, while one issue remains blocked by source quality. The useful response may be better source navigation or clearer documents, not a faster cell editor. Record that interpretation as a hypothesis to test in the next run.

When evaluating ParseMill, track the complete path from initial output to reviewed export. Use the effort log with correctness and coverage results to decide whether the workflow saves productive time on your actual documents.
