A benchmark score needs a defined scope
Inspect the inputs, review method and failures so you know what the result says about your own buying decision.
In ParseMill, select an extracted invoice field to inspect its source, correct the value and export the reviewed workbook. Try your own invoices as well as the interactive sample. Compare upload, checking and correction time with your current way of building the same spreadsheet.
Treat a benchmark as evidence about a stated test, not a universal product property. Your adoption decision still needs checks on the documents and outcomes that matter to your workflow.
Use a benchmark-claims worksheet
| Question | Evidence to request | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Which sources? | Document classes, counts and quality | Defines applicability |
| Which fields? | Required fields and exact match rules | Defines correctness |
| Which failures? | Attempted, failed and excluded inputs | Exposes missing coverage |
| How independent? | Development versus held-out sets | Limits tuning bias |
| Can it be repeated? | Versions, settings and reference outputs | Supports verification |
This original worksheet is a review aid, not a claim about any vendor. Fill it with the benchmark’s actual evidence and mark unavailable information explicitly. A missing answer is a limit on what you can conclude, not proof that the result is false.
scikit-learn: Metrics and scoring explains that metrics should align with the intended application. Check whether the benchmark’s target matches your required record and field relationships.
Inspect the denominator and independence
- Identify the attempted document population and any excluded sources. Check whether failed documents contributed to reported results.
- Read the field-matching rules, including whitespace, qualifiers, units, missing states and row association. Determine what errors the score can miss.
- Check whether the same examples shaped prompts, rules or thresholds. Look for an independently held-out evaluation set.
- Reproduce a relevant subset where source access permits, then run your own representative documents under fixed acceptance criteria.
Google: Dividing datasets explains why final evaluation should use examples separated from tuning. Repeatedly optimized benchmark examples are weaker evidence of performance on unseen inputs.
Watch comparisons that are not equivalent
A benchmark may compare one tool’s raw output with another tool’s manually corrected output, or use different document subsets. Check that both systems receive the same source and are scored at the same stage. Human review time should be reported separately if it differs.
A field-weighted score can be dominated by a few large easy documents. Ask for results by source class and document-level usability when those measures affect your workload. Avoid inferring uncertainty or generalization from a headline percentage alone.
Turn the evidence into a practical trial
The worksheet is complete when each claim has supporting scope information or an explicit limitation. Use the gaps to design a focused trial rather than debating an unexplained number. Record your own failures and correction effort alongside successful cases, using the same acceptance criteria for each attempted document.
When considering ParseMill, evaluate the source-backed examples and then test your representative documents. Choose based on reviewed usefulness for your task, with transparent metrics and reproducible evidence.
