Ask what the score measures

Judge the extracted result against the source and your acceptance checks so the buying decision rests on usable evidence.

In ParseMill, select an extracted invoice field to inspect its source, correct the value and export the reviewed workbook. Try your own invoices as well as the interactive sample. Compare upload, checking and correction time with your current way of building the same spreadsheet.

A high score can help prioritize review, but a wrong row association or omitted field may not receive a useful score at all. Define correctness and coverage before relying on a threshold.

Use a calibration-check fixture

0.90–1.00201890%

These invented counts illustrate a review worksheet, not product performance or a sufficient statistical study. The small groups have substantial uncertainty. They show how observed outcomes can differ from a score label and why unscored fields need their own reporting.

scikit-learn: Probability calibration compares predicted probabilities with observed frequencies. A heuristic score requires evidence before it can be interpreted as a calibrated probability.

Evaluate a proposed review threshold

  1. Document the score’s stated meaning and the exact event considered correct, including record association, value, qualifier and unit.
  2. Collect representative examples with independently checked outcomes. Keep development examples separate from final evaluation where the threshold is being tuned.
  3. Group scores and report counts, observed correctness and relevant uncertainty. Include missing scores, failed documents and omitted fields separately.
  4. Choose a review policy based on intended use and measured behavior. Reassess it when document classes, tool versions or source quality change.

Microsoft: Document extraction accuracy and confidence distinguishes extraction confidence from measured accuracy and discusses human review. Follow the particular system’s documented semantics instead of assuming all products use the same scoring model.

Avoid misleading threshold claims

A threshold chosen after inspecting the same examples can look better than it performs on new documents. Do not report its observed success as a universal guarantee. Also check which errors remain above the threshold: a few critical identifier or unit errors may matter more than many harmless formatting differences.

If the score is only ordinal, use it as a ranking signal and label it accordingly. A useful ranking can reduce review effort without supporting a claim about exact probabilities.

Use evidence to set the workflow

For the fixture, report the three groups and their actual counts without claiming that twenty examples establish calibration. Decide what additional evaluation is needed before automatically accepting fields. Keep the policy and evaluation version with the release record, including the source classes represented and any important groups still untested.

When evaluating ParseMill or another extraction workflow, ask which confidence signals are actually available and test their usefulness on your documents. Base acceptance on evidence and the intended task rather than a reassuring label.
